Our children
The children CASA serves
have been removed from their homes and are placed in foster care while
the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services (TDFPS) works
with the families in eliminating the risk factors that resulted in the
removal. Children served by CASA volunteers range in age from birth to
eighteen years of age. CASA of Central Texas is responsible for serving
children in the counties geographically located between Austin and San
Antonio, two major cities in Texas. As the total population in our
counties rises, so does the number of reported cases of child
abuse/neglect. In 2006, the combined child population in our counties
was 90,566. Of these children, 4,098 were alleged victims of
abuse/neglect and 706 children were removed from their homes and placed
in state protective care (increased from 662 children in 2005) (The
Texas Department of Family and Protective Services 2006 Data Books).
CASA of Central Texas served 228 of those 706 children - about 32% of
those children in care. This was a great accomplishment but 478 children
were left without that strong voice. Our goal is to provide a volunteer
advocate for every child.
